The Patient

Bernardo is a wealthy businessman. He is a workaholic who couldn't seem to stop working. He is so ambitious he didn't have time for anything else.
Then, he fell ill. After a series of tests, it was found that he has cancer. The doctor recommended treatments but he didn't  guarantee that he will get well. Still, he said, Bernardo should take the chance.
Bernardo sought for second opinion, and third, and fourth. The doctors said the same thing.
Bernardo looked at his house and considered all his accumulated wealth. What was he going to do with them? Then, he asked his private nurse..
'If you only have one year to live, what are you going to do with your life?'
The nurse answered..
'I will do good deeds. I will donate all my money to charitable institutions and all my possessions to other people who could make use of them when I'm gone. Maybe they will remember me. But maybe not. But regardless, I would die happy because I did good with what I had.'
Bernardo thought about it hard. Maybe it was a good idea. After all, he has no family to leave his wealth to.
So, he called his lawyer and changed his will bequeathing his wealth to an orphanage, to a nursing home, and to a cancer research institute.
He authorized his lawyer to sell his properties and use the money to put up a scholarship foundation for poor but deserving students. In a short while, Bernardo made a lot of people very happy.
Suddenly, Bernardo started to feel better himself. He followed the doctors' advice and underwent therapy. After a few months, the doctor gave him the good news. His body was responding well to treatment and it was possible for that he would get better.
Bernardo was elated. So, he wasn't going to die after all. Then, he remembered what he did and he realized how much money he had given away. He began to regret his decision to sell his properties and give the money away. Then, he suddenly remembered his will.
He immediately gave his lawyer a call and told him about his decision to change his will. When his lawyer arrived, Bernardo got up to meet him but he got dizzy and collapsed on the floor. He hit his head really hard.
Bernardo had an internal hemorrhage and died the following day leaving his will as it was.
